On Location: Todos Santos, Mexico

Here are probably way too many photos from my recent trip to Todos Santos, but I wanted to share with you how magical and splendid this small town of 5000 is, and the best way to do that was with pictures.  Enjoy.

The Catholic Church on the town square

the town square

development, and maybe over development on the edge of town

a night shot of a local street, child playing

interior of the Hotel California (yes, of the Eagles fame) restaurant; there's not really that much 'living it up'

doors to a suite at Casa Bentley, where we stayed

the very beautiful brick of The Todos Santos Inn, a lovely hotel

an interior passage way at the Inn

a sitting area at the Todos Santos Inn

the bar at the Inn
the Todos Santos Inn bar, beautiful wood and chandelier

carved doors in town

"The Universal Mother" by Benito Ortiz, sculptor

the van of a couple crossing the globe in their van, yep, 2 Hippies

our bodega for Baja wine (I hope to get a story on them soon)

a recreated home, in a traditional style; I was most fascinated and intrigued by the woven walls

a taco stand on the street, great street food

with the dollar trading at about 14 to 1, this is a pretty good deal

at Los Cerritos beach, the only swimming beach in the area, sunset and surfers

this is not Hotel California, although some think it is; rather it is now a  boutique hotel but was built as a private home, at Los Cerritos

a still life in our kitchen, with passionfruit and tomatoes

I love the Mexican Coca-Cola, from a glass bottle, made with sugar

a menu on the wall at the Caffe Todos Santos

a burro in the wild, we had crossed onto his territory on our geological exploration of the canyons

a pipe organ cactus in the canyon

a view of the canyon hills

a very large rock with a most interesting geological fold

a plano blanco tree, the bark of which is used in tanning leather

an overly large and decorative crab salad in La Paz

delicious freshly made, still warm doughnuts and coffee for breakfast at the caffe

the Volkswagen Beetle used to be produced in Mexico, and many remain

for the tourist trade

these casitas high on the hills outside of town were the location of our stargazing tour

Sergio's telescope

while the women did zumba across the street, the men used the outside arena for exercise

you know of my preference for porcelain breakfast cups, but this  service was most charming

a fruit vendor on the street, note the cucumber

These are great images...what a fantastic place to visit I have never even heard of it and I didn't even know that there really was a Hotel California. It looks as if you are having a most wonderful trip...the opportunity to see the turtles hatching in the last post ~ wow.

I want to go to Mexico! The pictures are great - and you definitely didn't post too many. But where were all of the people, or did you deliberately take photos when there wasn't anyone around?

We used to go to Baja California when one of my brothers lived in San Diego. Your photo of Los Cerritos beach reminded me of some good times. What I wouldn't give for a fish taco and one of those donuts right now.

Adrienne, the turtles were a true highlight indeed--so simple but so profound.

Mary Kay, although it was high season there were not as many people as I expected to see. Also, I did wait for the moment to shoot without people as well. And of course I chose not to include pictures of myself or my friends. There was major road construction between the Cabos and Todos Santos and we figured that cut down on the tourists as well. I didn't mind not having a crowd though.

Sometimes small towns are the best, and there seems to be an awful lot going on in this one!

Those tourist dresses are wonderful. I have them in many colors to lounge around, particularly in the summer. Depending the province they are made they can be spectacular. The embroidery is done by hand. Not sure if the one in the foto is.
